I’ve finally moved up to DSLR.

For Christmas (early), [info]velocityb0y bought me the new Canon Rebel XTi, something I’ve been lusting after for a while now. I’m absolutely astounded by the quality of this thing! It makes our old point-and-shoot camera look like complete and total crap; the colors are richer, the flash doesn’t wash things out, and the megapixel difference … well, it’s significant (10.1 MP, versus 3).

Courtesy of the XTi, here’s Rebel’s most recent glamour shot, complete with Christmas tree in the background. (I’m thinking of printing it up as a greeting card.)

The original image looks a lot better. I had to shrink this down from 3.5 meg.

Rebel is now three years old. Her birthday was yesterday, and we celebrated with play, Greenies, and several energetic walks. I have a hard time believing she’d be 21 in human years … old enough to drink. To me, she still seems like a crazy, playful, loving puppy.

Rebel, 08/09/06

If you want to see how much she’s grown over the last three years, check out the retrospective I posted last year, in honor of her 2nd birthday. (And, while I’m at it, here’s my post from her 1st birthday.) I think, in general, [info]velocityb0y and I have done a good job raising her. She might not be perfectly socialized towards other dogs (we’re working on it), but she’s certainly happy. And she definitely loves her people.

After [info]velocityb0y got off work today, we drove down to Kent to meet a dog named Buffy. She’s a 5-year-old Australian Shepherd/Malamute mix, and her owners are looking to find her a new home.

She seems like a very sweet dog … energetic, loving and playful. We’re going to meet with our vet on Monday and try to figure out how Rebel might react to a new dog in the house. If all goes well, we’ll be bringing her home early next week.

Exactly two years ago today, on August 9th, 2003, Rebel’s mother – Sierra Sunrise – gave birth to a litter of approximately six puppies. I’m not sure the exact size of Sierra’s litter because, by the time [info]velocityb0y and I got to the breeder – on October 11th – only Rebel and one very fluffy littermate remained. After we played with the puppies for about an hour, we chose Rebel as our new family member… Sometimes, I wonder what’s become of that other puppy – I wonder how she’s doing today, out there with her adoptive family – but I never regret making the choice we made (even though she was a very cute ball of fluff). Rebel’s the most loving, energetic, playful, devoted dog I’ve ever met (and, yes, you can probably read that as, “she’s a big ole SPAZZ”)… And, at this point, I can’t imagine life without her.

So, to commemorate this auspicious day, here are some photos of Rebel as she balloons from 15 pounds, to 85:

Don’t let the calm, noble expression fool you … she’s still a complete spazz!

As you can she, she’s grown quite a bit over the last two years, but she’s still a puppy at heart (a very big, very strong puppy) … and she’ll always be a puppy to me.

Well, it appears Belle weathered the surgery without complication. They removed three BB-sized growths from her upper mammary tract (I’m sure I’m getting the term wrong, but it’s in her breast, near her front legs). Those growths will be sent out to the lab, which will be able to identify them as benign or malignant … we should be getting the results on Thursday, and we’re praying for good news.

She’s recovering well … sleeping off the last remnants of anesthesia. When I first got her home at 4:30, she immediately curled up beneath my desk, wrapping her 80-pound body around my legs.

She is, truly, a sweet dog.

Here’s another picture from yesterday’s impromptu photo shoot.  )

An interesting side-note: When he was shaving her for surgery, the vet found a scar from a previous operation … perhaps two or three years old. We still have no idea what Belle’s life was like before we rescued her in December, but, apparently, it wasn’t without complication.

I was pretty much worthless today, having been zombified sometime late last night. I wish it were a more interesting story, but it was just simple carelessness on my part. A sneaky, silent-toed minion of the unholy dead managed to evade the dogs, the electrified window panes, and the heat-sensitive homing projectiles (what the hell was I thinking … deploying heat-sensitive weaponry against the undead). And, while I slept a somewhat-drunken sleep, this asshat minion took a large bite out of my forearm, draining me of my last spark of life. I knew I was fairly high up on the zombie hit-list (due to my high-profile “lifecycle” research), but I thought I had another couple weeks to prepare the defenses, to shore up the – obviously gapping – security holes in my perimeter.

I should have listened to [info]velocityb0y... Never trust your life to Radio Shack technology!

In more pressing news, Belle had the new lumps in her breast looked at today, and the vet decided to schedule surgery to have them removed. This is the same type of surgery she had before, when the vet removed a chain of growths closer to her groin. Those lumps proved completely benign, and our vet thinks these new ones might be more of the same. But there’s a chance they might be cancerous, so I scheduled the surgery for as soon as possible … that being tomorrow. She goes in in the early morning, and we’ll have her home and recovering by mid-afternoon. I’m not quite as freaked-out as I was the first time she went in (you can read about it in this post), but I am worried… As I’ve mentioned before, I’m very fond of our sweet pup.

So, if you’ve got a spare thought tomorrow afternoon, think good things for Belle (at about 1 or 2 pm EST)… She’d most appreciate thoughts of warm grass to lie on, cloth to chew, and mounds and mounds of unguarded potato chips.

I didn’t talk about it in my journal, but Belle had a couple of disastrous vet visits last week. During the first visit, on Monday, our vet did a general checkup. First, he pegged her at 8 years old, well outside the 3 - 5 range the rescue agency had told us (but, frankly, this didn’t surprise me too much; Belle does not move like a young dog). He examined her ears and found an ear infection (easily treated), and then moved on to her hips. While feeling around her hips, he found some lumps in her breast and immediately identified them as cancerous growths … telling us there’s a 50/50 chance they’re malignant and deadly. Needless to say, [info]velocityb0y and I were very surprised, and more than a little distraught; we immediately scheduled a surgical appointment for Thursday, to have them removed.

On Thursday, after putting her under anesthesia for the surgery, the vet checked her mouth, looking for the source of her atrocious breath. He found a fragment of food (a little piece of a Greenie) lodged in her gumline. The little piece of food had begun to fester, creating an ulcer at the base of one of her molars (while also causing one of the rankest smells imaginable). He ended up having to remove the entire tooth. Also, while she was under, the vet x-rayed her hips (a notorious weakness in German Shepherds) and found severe hip dysplasia on her right side… The hip dysplasia goes a long way towards explaining her slow walking gait and arthritis, and it’ll be something [info]velocityb0y and I will have to deal with – whether getting her hip replaced, or just keeping her on pain medication – once we learn more about her cancer.

Finally, after the mouth exam and the x-ray, the vet operated, removing the strand of cancerous growths from her breast. Apparently, this wasn’t a very difficult operation – the lumps were right beneath the skin – but he did have to switch from scalpel to laser halfway through, to staunch excessive bleeding. And, as soon as she was sewn back up, the vet had the lumps sent off to a pathologist for analysis.

We still haven’t heard if the growths are malignant or benign, but we’re expecting the lab results Tuesday, Wednesday, or maybe Thursday. In the meantime, [info]velocityb0y and I are dangling on tenterhooks.

So, in summary, the vet found an ear infection, an impacted molar, severe hip dysplasia, and cancer. Plus, he thinks she might be much older than we’d previously believed… Altogether, not a very good week for Belle… But, considering all the crap she’s been through, she’s been handling it like a trooper. She seems very attached to her people, and I hope she realizes we’d do everything in our power to keep her healthy and happy.

When I posted my last entry, on Tuesday, I thought I’d weathered the worst of my cold. Man, was I wrong... I’ve survived the last three days on nothing but Sudafed and Oxycontin, unable to work, unable to do anything but sit on the sofa, moan, bitch and drip (… that last would be my sinuses, natch).

But the symptoms have begun to subside, and I am, once again, starting to feel human.

During all the nastiness, [info]velocityb0y was a saint. He listened to my bitching, kept me entertained, and kept me well fed… Unfortunately, it looks like I’m going to have the chance to repay his kindness. And soon. Just tonight, he started sneezing; and, if it’s the same thing I had, he’ll no doubt be bedridden before tomorrow’s out.

In better news, we’ve added a new member to our family.

Bright-eyed Belle.

This is Belle. She’s a rescue dog, found up for adoption at our local PetSmart. She’s older than Rebel (perhaps 3-5 years old), and much more sedate … not fearful or shy, but nowhere near as spastic as Rebel. I think she has a more “classic” German Shepherd look … longer fur, wider head, and light-brown and black coloring (as opposed to Rebel’s red and black coloring). While I think Rebel may look sleeker and more elegant, I think Belle’s just plain buff … a gorgeous dog. And they’re both as sweet as can be.

It’s late, I’m tired, and my back hurts… So, with that in mind, I’m keeping this post short.

Workwise, the last couple days have been very productive. I’ve been making good progress on my edits, pounding the early chapters of Troublebox into shape; basically, this entails just smoothing things out and fretting over all the tiny details. That, and several noteworthy distractions – Morrowind, Roswell, and, tonight, the excellent The Incredibles – have managed to keep my mind off catastrophic recent events. And that’s a good thing.

So, with that brief update out of the way, here’s a picture of Rebel laughing at you:

I resumed work on chapter 21 today, and I made a lot of progress. I’d forgotten how insanely ambitious the second half of this chapter is. I’ve got one character explaining a large portion of Freudian psychology in the span of four pages… I cover Id, Ego, Superego and the concept of repression, all in a dense exchange of dialogue. And I try to do it in a poignant, straightforward, and entertaining way.

Frankly, I can’t imagine what I was thinking when I decided to do this … like deciding to dodge a bullet from point-blank range. Yet, as I read through this section today, I couldn’t help but smile… I think I managed to pull it off. I think the readers who are willing to expend effort can take something profound from this passage, while the unwilling can simply tune out on the hard stuff (no doubt thinking, psychobabble, psychobabble, blah, blah, blah) while still managing to pick up on all the major plot-points.

After we finished work, [info]velocityb0y and I started celebrating Rebel’s first birthday. We gave her a couple new toys, both of which she seems to like (she’s already managed to chew the corner off the red rubber doodad thing). We took her for a long walk to the park and have been playing with her all night long… It’s hard to believe her puppyhood is already over (well, she’ll always be my puppy, no matter how old she gets). It seems like we just brought her home for the first time … this tiny bundle of fur, tongue and saliva.

Here’s a picture of Rebel on her first day home:
