I’ve finally moved up to DSLR.

For Christmas (early), [info]velocityb0y bought me the new Canon Rebel XTi, something I’ve been lusting after for a while now. I’m absolutely astounded by the quality of this thing! It makes our old point-and-shoot camera look like complete and total crap; the colors are richer, the flash doesn’t wash things out, and the megapixel difference … well, it’s significant (10.1 MP, versus 3).

Courtesy of the XTi, here’s Rebel’s most recent glamour shot, complete with Christmas tree in the background. (I’m thinking of printing it up as a greeting card.)

Rebel and the Tree

The original image looks a lot better. I had to shrink this down from 3.5 meg.

We got 6 inches of snow on Monday night, leaving us pretty much housebound for all of yesterday.

Here’s a view from our front window.

And there’s supposed to be another 1-3 inches tonight.

On Sunday, [info]velocityb0y and I drove out to Spokane so I could do a little research. I’m planning a new story – a haunted city story – and I’m trying to find an appropriate mid-to-small-size burg to throw into apocalyptic, hellmouth-style chaos. Spokane seems like a good candidate; it’s about the right size, and its location and environment seem ideal. We drove 300 miles so I could wander around aimlessly, taking photos and trying to imagine the streets empty and haunted. Not exactly difficult. There were very few people out and about … nothing like Seattle.

I took a lot of photos with our little Olympus point-and-shoot camera. Most are crap – meant to serve as reminders, hammering down location and feel – but I found some interesting images hidden amongst all the blurry and boring snapshots. I’ve hidden a couple behind this cut. )

I haven’t decided whether or not I’m going to write this story for National Novel Writing Month (thus imposing a 30-day deadline on myself). On the one hand, 2,000+ words a day is pretty insane. I’m sure, at that rate, at least half of those words would be utter crap. On the other hand, a deadline like that might help my motivation, might get me working when I’d otherwise feel like surfing the web. And it would be pretty cool to finish a novel in a month.

I took Smokey to get a haircut today. Her long fur was getting matted and gross, and no matter how much we brushed, we couldn’t get it all straightened out … nothing but mad lumps and tangles, like dried molasses in a shag carpet.

Here are some before and after shots. )

I think she hates me now.

Rebel is now three years old. Her birthday was yesterday, and we celebrated with play, Greenies, and several energetic walks. I have a hard time believing she’d be 21 in human years … old enough to drink. To me, she still seems like a crazy, playful, loving puppy.

Rebel, 08/09/06

If you want to see how much she’s grown over the last three years, check out the retrospective I posted last year, in honor of her 2nd birthday. (And, while I’m at it, here’s my post from her 1st birthday.) I think, in general, [info]velocityb0y and I have done a good job raising her. She might not be perfectly socialized towards other dogs (we’re working on it), but she’s certainly happy. And she definitely loves her people.

I survived my first paragliding expedition. I only got twenty minutes in the air – compared to six hours spent standing around, waiting – but it was worth it. I got a little bit queasy during some of the spinning acrobatics, but nothing too bad … no projectile vomiting across the landscape. Next time, I’ll bring some Dramamine. And maybe my video camera.

I did manage to take some pictures.

After [info]velocityb0y got off work today, we drove down to Kent to meet a dog named Buffy. She’s a 5-year-old Australian Shepherd/Malamute mix, and her owners are looking to find her a new home.

She seems like a very sweet dog … energetic, loving and playful. We’re going to meet with our vet on Monday and try to figure out how Rebel might react to a new dog in the house. If all goes well, we’ll be bringing her home early next week.

Today, [info]velocityb0y and I skipped work and took Rebel for a hike. We attacked the summit of nearby Squak Mountain. Unfortunately, Rebel got tired and we had to turn around halfway to the top… She’s an indoor dog. She had a lot of fun, but she’s just not used to all that exercise.

Not exactly the best day today … feeling a bit sick and tetchy.

I was doing okay until we arrived at Home Depot sometime this afternoon, but that hell-hole maze of toilet seats and light switches, bird bathes and wheelbarrows, just drove me right over the edge. We stood in the lighting section for fifteen minutes waiting to be acknowledged, waiting for somebody – anybody – to respond to our repeated requests for help. Finally, after asking an employee for assistance – politely, too, I might add – and hearing “That’s not my department,” without an offer to go FIND somebody to lend us a hand, I completely snapped. In my most sarcastic voice, I said, “Sorry, I thought you actually worked here,” then I yelled “FUCK!” at the top of my lungs and walked away.

In the future, I will avoid Home Depot whenever I can. They can suck my big fat one.

On a more positive note, here’s a list of the best music videos of 2005, as compiled by DoCopenhagen. I was completely unfamiliar with most of the selections – I haven’t watched MTV in a long time – but DoCopenhagen were kind enough to provide links to all 50 entries. Super-cool.

I’m still browsing through the list, but my favorite, so far, is the video for Beck’s “Hell Yes.”

What a buxom babe!

Yes, that’s [info]velocityb0y in English milk-maid drag, in front of about 100 people! That picture alone – the photographic evidence – makes his birthday party a resounding success… If you want to hear more, he writes about it here.

If you’ve been paying attention, you’ve probably noticed that I’m not blogging as much as I used to, or in as great a length. Truthfully, I haven’t been in a writer-ly mood as of late. Perhaps I’m burnt out after completing my novel, Troublebox, or perhaps I’m too involved in the rapidly approaching move to Seattle (there’s still so much packing and housework to do)… Personally, I think I’ve just become incredibly lazy.

Things should pick up after the move. In the meantime, I’ll try for a couple more one-sentence stories (maybe even some one-sentence deviant erotica), and perhaps some top ten lists … top ten movies of 2005, top ten books … you know, that type of year-end crap.

Happy Christmas Eve Eve!

Today, [info]velocityb0y and I joined [info]desic and his father at a local resort hotel for their annual ICE! exhibit. Every year this hotel flies in 40 ice-sculpture artists and sets them to work in a 9-degree room, resulting in a series of frozen tableaus: a living room made of ice, a forest path complete with woodland animals, a massive nativity scene, and – finally – Santa’s workshop, complete with ice slides… It was all very cool (bad pun intended).

We took our digital camera and managed to get a couple good shots, including this Ice Angel:

Here’s the entire album.
